Dear Richfield Families and Staff,
We are reaching out today with heavy hearts in response to the deeply disturbing allegations detailed in a criminal complaint involving a staff member at Richfield Middle School. According to the complaint, the individual—who was immediately placed on administrative leave and is in custody—is accused of engaging in serious and illegal sexual misconduct with a student. We know this news is incredibly painful and upsetting for many in our community.
Our priority is, and always will be, the safety and well-being of our students. We are devastated by what has occurred and are committed to supporting all students, families and staff as we navigate this difficult time together.
As adults—whether caregivers, educators or community members—we play a critical role in helping young people process traumatic or confusing events. Children and teens may respond in different ways: with questions, silence, strong emotions or changes in behavior. It’s important that we remain available, patient and willing to talk, even when conversations are hard.
To support you, we have compiled helpful resources and reminders:
Tips for Talking with Young People About Difficult Topics
- Start by creating a safe space for conversation. Let them know it’s okay to have questions or feelings.
- Use age-appropriate language and answer honestly, even if it means saying, “I don’t know.”
- Reassure them that they are not alone and that adults are here to help keep them safe.
- Watch for changes in behavior that may signal stress or confusion, and seek help if needed.
- For more helpful guidance, visit Effectively Communicating with Teens.
Resources Available to Students and Families
- School Counselors and Mental Health Staff are available to talk with students during the school day. Please get in touch with the school office if your child would like to connect with someone.
- Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 for free, 24/7 support from trained crisis counselors.
- Richfield Police Department: If you need to report any concerns or require support, please get in touch with law enforcement directly.
We also want to say this clearly: if you or someone you know has experienced inappropriate behavior or feels unsafe, there are trusted adults and community resources available to help. Speaking up is incredibly brave—and no one should have to do it alone.
We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and take every possible step to ensure our schools are safe, supportive spaces for all students. Thank you for standing with us as we work together to uphold a culture of respect, accountability and care across the Richfield community.
Sincerely,
Steve Unowsky

Dear Richfield Families and Community,
I am reaching out to share some difficult and deeply concerning news that affects our school community.
Earlier this week, we were made aware of allegations of misconduct involving a Richfield Middle School staff member and a student. We responded immediately in accordance with District policies—placing the staff member on administrative leave and notifying the Richfield Police Department.
We have since been informed by the police that the individual has been taken into custody. The case is currently under investigation. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and deeply appreciate their swift response and dedication to protecting our students.
We understand that this news may be upsetting and that many of you may have questions. Due to state data privacy laws and the active police investigation, we are unable to share additional details at this time. Please know that this decision is made to protect the integrity of the investigation and the privacy of those involved.
The safety, well-being, and trust of our students, staff and families are our highest priorities. We are committed to creating and maintaining a school environment where every student feels safe, respected and supported. If your child needs support processing this information, our school counselors and mental health staff are available and ready to help.
Whether you’re a student, parent, staff member, or community member—if you feel unsafe or have experienced misconduct, we urge you to speak up. Talk to someone you trust, reach out to school staff, or contact community resources or law enforcement for support.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We know this is a difficult moment, but together we will continue to uphold the values of safety, respect and care in every school and throughout our community.
Sincerely,
Steve Unowsky
Superintendent
