Dear RPS Students, Families and Staff,

The recent event in Georgia, which left eight people dead, including six Asian American women, has shaken the Asian American community. We are heartbroken for the victims and their families, as well as the greater Asian American community, which has faced a dramatic uptick in racism and violence in the past year. One study from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, documented a 150% increase in violence towards Asian Americans since the beginning of the pandemic. This comes at a time when many historically marginalized communities are also facing increased violence and discrimination.

In Richfield Public Schools, we pride ourselves on our open, welcoming community. We want every student, family and staff member to feel supported and valued. We believe that valuing diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives fosters unity and empowers all. In fact, we have woven diversity and equity into all of the goals within our 2021-26 Strategic Plan.

If you’re looking for ways to address anti-Asian discrimination, WeAreTeachers.com has compiled several resources that help explain the history of anti-Asian racism, how to create a welcoming environment, tools for use in classrooms and more.

As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We are in a place to make a real, lasting difference in this world. Working together, we can seek to understand one another, develop our empathy and build lasting, meaningful relationships with those who are different than ourselves.

Richfield High School: Where Dreams Are Realized

In Richfield Public Schools, creating an environment where students not only feel connected and supported, but also one where students want to return to after graduation is an accomplishment that we are proud of. We are thrilled to welcome RHS alum Ms. Rosas back into our District, this time as a teacher, with dreams of her own to support and inspire her students.

Expanded 6-12 Hybrid Program

We are excited to share with you the plans for the expanded hybrid programs at the secondary level. Hybrid learning students in grades 6-12 will be able to attend in person four days per week. Distance learning is still an option for all students.

In-Person Learning for Elementary Students

We would like to share with you the plan to expand our in-person program for elementary students. Starting on Wednesday, March 17, all elementary students who have been on a waitlist for hybrid/in-person learning will be able to attend school five days per week. 

CTE Students in Woods class

CTE stands for Career and Technical Education. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are a sequence of courses that integrate core academic knowledge with technical and occupational skills to provide students with a pathway to postsecondary education, industry training and certification, and lifelong careers.

We encourage you to try taking a stroll at home or on the way to school—we think it will be fun and refreshing. Let’s all bundle up and walk together on February 26!

Expanding the 6-12 Hybrid Program

We are excited about the opportunity to expand our hybrid learning program for secondary students 6-12, and we have already started developing a comprehensive plan to expand the hybrid program safely and effectively. You can find important updates and a timeline here.
