Classes resume Tuesday for grades 6-12

Dear RPS Students, Families and Staff,

The last few days have been confusing, overwhelming and heartbreaking for many. We want to thank everyone who has come together to show love, solidarity and support by cleaning the stadium, leaving chalk messages for students and staff, sending kind words and proving, once again, that we are #RichfieldStrong. 

Based on information related to law enforcement’s investigation into the online threat and our ongoing communication and partnership with the Richfield Police Department and state and federal authorities, we have made the decision to reopen our secondary schools and programs Tuesday. 

We know events like this have an impact on all of us, even our younger students. We also know consistency and predictability are important. For students who need more time to process events, teachers and staff are here to help them talk about how these events have impacted them. One-on-one support is also available with a social worker or counselor.

How Threats are Investigated

• School administrators start by working with school social workers to gather information, conduct an assessment and notify parents/guardians. Safety plans may also be enacted for any individuals involved.
• If the level of harm is deemed as potentially severe or there is insufficient information for district staff to assess the risk, referrals to local law enforcement and potentially mental health services are made.

Student Safety Measures

• District Office and districtwide staff will be at each building this week to provide additional support.
• There will be regular patrols from the Richfield Police Department in the area. Richfield High School will also have a full-time officer during the day in addition to added officers during arrival and dismissal. 
• We will follow all safety protocols. 
• How you can help:
  • Talk to someone if you need support — this applies to all of us, students, staff and families!
  • Report suspicious activity or threats.
  • Only use the main entrance/exit to our buildings and never prop open doors or allow others access to the building.

Student Support

• All schools, including elementary schools, will have counselors and/or social workers available, as well as additional staff support from the district office. We encourage any students who are struggling or who simply want to talk to reach out to one of our student support staff or their classroom teacher. 
• We will work with partner organizations as needed to provide additional support for students or staff who need or want to talk with someone.
