Richfield Public Schools Receives 2022 Magna Award for Equity Work

We are happy to announce that Richfield Public Schools is a National School Boards Association (NSBA) 2022 Magna Award winner. They were recognized for their commitment to equity as a Silver Award winner in the 28th annual Magna Awards program. The Richfield Public School District is one of 18 winners—three Grand Prize and 12 Silver Award winners—across the nation receiving this honor.

Sponsored by NSBA’s flagship magazine, American School Board Journal, the Magna Awards honor districts across the country for their programs that break down barriers to achievement for underserved students. The Richfield Public School District was selected as a winner by an independent panel of judges.

Their award-winning program was Reimagine Richfield, a student-led forum based on the Reimagine Minnesota events designed to “create lasting equity and excellence in education for all students.” Held during the 2016-17 school year, the entire student body of Richfield High School participated and provided invaluable feedback to help improve the school—from updating the building to improving the lunch menu, students had a lot to say about daily life in the high school, inequities that they experienced, and the things they wanted the district to do to fix it. And they listened. 

Over a five-year period, Richfield High School brought about dramatic change for all students and helped to eliminate the graduation gap.

“The 2022 Magna Award-winning districts represent the enormous efforts of school leaders during the pandemic to continue to remove barriers for their underserved and vulnerable children,” said NSBA Executive Director and CEO Dr. John Heim.

“We are excited by the dramatic impact this program has had in our high school and we are working to not only replicate it in our middle school, but to share it with other principals and superintendents so that they can facilitate it in their districts,” shared Superintendent Steven Unowsky. “Assistant Superintendent Latanya Daniels, who was the high school principal at the time, and I have led several workshops to teach school leaders about the process so that they can also experience the dramatic outcomes that we have seen here in Richfield in the last five years.”

The Richfield Public School District will be highlighted in the April issue of the American School Board Journal.

Summer EBT Program for Eligible Families

Beginning this summer, the state of Minnesota will help families with eligible school-age children buy groceries during the summer. Eligible families will receive $120 per child, starting in June.
