RHS Green Team Launches Recycling Initiative

RHS Green Team Launches Recycling Initiative

Members of the RHS Green Team are excited to announce the launch of an aluminum can recycling drive to promote sustainability and environmental awareness in the Richfield community. You can participate by collecting and depositing aluminum cans in the cage located at the northeast corner of Richfield High School on 70th Street.

“We’re asking people to place their aluminum cans rinsed, uncrushed, and empty into the collection cage,” shared Green Team Vice President Sophia Hartman. “Doing so will help us maximize the amount we can collect and ensure the recycling process goes smoothly. We want to keep the cage clear of any other objects or trash. It’s important to note that we only collect aluminum cans, primarily drink cans, not tin cans from things like canned fruit or vegetables.”

After spring break, the Green Team will also introduce several collection bags inside the high school. These bags will allow students and staff to deposit their rinsed and emptied aluminum cans throughout the day. “This will make it even more convenient for everyone to participate,” President Sofia Ceja explained. “Green Team members will then take the cans from these bags and add them to the main collection point.”

The Green Team’s recycling drive is not only a local initiative but is also designed to foster friendly competition between schools. The Green Team has invited Holy Angels, Bloomington Jefferson, and Bloomington Kennedy to compete for the most cans collected, with the total amount measured in pounds. The goal is to sell the recycled aluminum to a scrap yard for market value, and the funds raised will help support future sustainability initiatives at RHS.

A final tally will be announced during the last week of school, revealing the total collected amount.

“We hope this will be a fun and Earth-friendly effort with elements of competition and community cooperation to leverage participation!  We’re excited to see how much the schools can collectively contribute.  We truly appreciate the help of everyone in the Richfield community,” said Co-Vice President Maddie Friel. “It’s going to take all of us working together to make this a success!”
