I. General Statement of Policy

It shall be the policy of the Board of Education to encourage ongoing cooperation between school officials and law enforcement agencies.  While school personnel have an obligation to protect the legal rights of students who are in their charge, they also have an obligation to cooperate with police officers in law enforcement and crime prevention. 

A. Cooperation with the Richfield Department of Public Safety shall be effected through the established Police / School Liaison Program and such other means as are deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools and the City Manager.  It is expected that the Police / School Liaison Officer will be cognizant of school / district policies and procedures.

II. Police Access to Students

The Board of Education authorizes the Superintendent to develop administrative guidelines describing the role of the principal and outlining the process by which police officers may interview a student in the course of their investigation of some violation of the law or wish to take a student into custody.
